2012 GOLF WEEK

Untypical warm, dry weather welcomed 89 Golfers from over 20 golf clubs to King James VI Golf Club’s 29th annual Golf Week, sponsored by Ness Motors. Golfers from as far afield as the Shetland Islands and Newcastle upon Tyne joined regular visitors from Camperdown and Downfield Golf Clubs in Dundee, and Selkirk and The Woll GC clubs in the Borders amongst others.. Despite relentless rainfall over the Summer months, James Sievwright and his team presented a course in excellent condition which didn’t go unnoticed with the visiting golfers. After qualifying rounds on Monday and Tuesday, 48 players progressed to Wednesday’s match-play stages, culminating in the Finals day on Friday the 7th September. Local knowledge obviously played a part this year with the 3 Finals featuring 5 King Jimmy members. The Scratch final matched Gordon Meikle from Ladybank GC against The Island’s Tam McLaren. Despite being 7 down after the opening 18 holes, Gordon staged a storming comeback to level things after 34. Regaining his renowned composure, Tam went back into the lead with a birdie 2 at the 35th before holding his nerve with a half at the last to capture his first Golf Week title. In the Scratch-12 Handicap Final, the all King James VI contest saw Paul McCarthy face Trevor Jones, with both players featuring in their first Golf Week Final. After establishing an early lead which had him 2 up after 18, Paul maintained his grip on the game to triumph 4&2. The 13-24 Handicap Final saw the experienced Ronnie Fitzpatrick take on youthful Greg Pullar. Although little between both players tee to green, Ronnie’s putter out-performed Greg’s on the day, and, after turning with a healthy 6 hole lead, he ran out an emphatic and worthy winner. Outwith the major finals, the other trophy winners on the week were; Wednesday Stableford; Ross Chisholm Shetland GC Thursday Medal; Ron Macleod KJVI Friday Stableford; Dave Gray Camperdown GC King James VI Golf Club are indebted to John Aitken and Ness Motors for their continued support of Golf Week.
